North Melbourne's VFLW team remains in contention for a finals position after a dominant display against Darebin at Arden Street Oval on Saturday.

Unwavering in their attack on the ball and opposition, the Kangaroos ran out 49-point victors. The 8.9 (57) to 1.2 (8) result extended their winning streak to three while leaving Darebin still winless.

For a second consecutive week, North Melbourne held its opponents scoreless in the opening quarter thanks to its swarming defence led by Reni Hicks and Kayla Peake.

The pair were relentless early and with Ciara Fitzgerald and Mietta McDonald alert behind the ball, it was Zara Flanigan who was able to strike first after some stoppage link-up play from Audrey Rhodes (27 disposals, eight clearances) and Jen Guy (26 disposals, 10 tackles).

Minutes later, the returning Georgia Nicholas made no mistake from a close-range set shot after getting on the end of a ball from Jess Nursey, who was a late inclusion for defender Teagan Bradley (back).

Nursey then added her own name to the growing list of goalkickers, following an unselfish assist at the top of the square from the crumbing Peake.

Building on the Roos' opening term supremacy, Hicks finished off a goal line scrap with an opportunistic major 10 minutes into the second quarter, before claiming a mark and converting off a darting ball from Mara McSweeney three minutes later for her second.

Torrential rain began as the main break approached, but the Roos remained clean with the patrolling Fitzgerald (24 disposals, five marks) making it difficult for the Falcons to generate anything forward of centre.

The visitors did manage a breakthrough on the half-time siren through Lauren Jatczak, but North Melbourne had convincingly dictated the game's terms, going into the rooms +79 in disposals and with a 28-point lead.

With the rain still tumbling down in the third term, both sides struggled to create shots on goal as they went back and forth on the slippery surface.

However, winger Jess Mourney conjured a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock as she gathered and goaled from inside the centre square.

Mackie Sutcliffe continued to make life challenging for Darebin in the final quarter, intercepting a Falcons forward line entry and launching a rebound that resulted in a soccer-like goal for Felicity Theodore.

With percentage at a premium as they chase a finals spot, the Kangaroos remained eager to grow their advantage as the term wore on.

After tallying inside 50s and forward-half intercepts at will, it was eventually Marli Klaumanns-Moller who got reward for effort, converting a set shot with 10 seconds left to cap off the win.

"Coming off the Essendon and Saints games we were really confident heading into today," North Melbourne coach Steph Binder told NMFC Media.

"It was all about us playing the brand of footy that we want to, and that was going to be whether we graded today as a success or not in terms of how we were moving the ball, how we were competing, how we were defending … and we're really happy with the way we performed this afternoon."

The result leaves North Melbourne on the brink of the top six with one game left to play in the home and away season, and Binder said she and her squad are prepared to do all they can next weekend.

"There's more belief than ever," she said.

"We've still got the finals firmly in our sights but we're going to have to – regardless of what happens with other results – win next week.

"We haven't gotten up over Collingwood yet so I think we're going to go in really confident in the way that we're playing footy and knowing that our best footy can match it with anyone's."

The Kangaroos almost pulled off an epic, final-term comeback last time out against the Magpies, but Binder said a full four-quarter performance will be needed next Saturday of they are to have a shot at the finals.

"We can't let them blow us out of the park like they did in the first three quarters last time we played," she said.

"We scored five goals against them in the last quarter so we know we've got the ability to score against them. We just have to play, as clichéd as it sounds, that four quarters of footy."
