Boomer backs 'hard' Scott
Captain Brent Harvey says Brad Scott's hard edge could be just what the Roos need
Scott was named as Dean Laidley's coaching successor on Monday and the Kangaroos' skipper was quick to give the appointment his seal of approval.
"I had a couple of run-ins with him early," Harvey said at Arden Street on Tuesday.
"That (Scott's fiery nature) is probably good and something we need at the footy club – a really hard edge – and if he brings that to our group I reckon it's going to be great.
"He's pretty young, we've got a young group obviously and I think it's going to be a good relationship."
However, Harvey said he felt for caretaker coach Darren Crocker, who missed out on the top job after serving as interim coach since the mid-season break. The North Melbourne premiership player will stay at the helm for the remaining games against St Kilda and Port Adelaide.
"I think it's disappointing for Crock," Harvey said. "He put his name up and wanted to coach the team.
"We probably didn't help him with the win-loss ratio when he took over half way through the year."
Harvey said he was unsure whether Crocker would remain at North next season but endorsed what he had offered in his nine weeks so far.
"He's been absolutely fantastic," he said.
"Whatever he does he'll make the right decision. He's a really good coach."
The Roos meet the Saints on Sunday and Harvey said extra impetus would come from the milestones of Brady Rawlings (200 games), Daniel Harris (150) and Scott McMahon (50).
But he agreed the Saints' first loss of the season – against Essendon on Sunday – would prompt a ruthless response.
"It's probably a bad thing for us because they'll have a bit more fire in the belly," he said.
"We'll back ourselves ... we think we're a chance every single week and playing against the best team in the competition is a good challenge for us."
Harvey said he was enthusiastic about the future after a difficult season.
"[It's] the first time in a long time I'm looking forward to a pre-season," he said. "We've had so many hiccups this year.
"I can't wait to get this group of players back to the footy club in a new facility and a big, hard pre-season with a new coach."
