Prized draftee George Wardlaw is set to make his highly anticipated AFL debut on Saturday against the Sydney Swans at Marvel Stadium.
The 18-year-old was taken from the Oakleigh Chargers with North Melbourne’s second pick and the fourth overall in the 2022 AFL Draft.
He began his top-age season at the Chargers in gripping fashion with 24 disposals, eight tackles and a goal against the Sandringham Dragons in Round 1 of the NAB League season. He further strengthened his case as one of 2022’s top draft prospects when he was named best afield for the AFL Academy side in a clash with Collingwood's VFL side before suffering a hamstring injury.
Wardlaw has made fans eager for his AFL debut while building match fitness in the reserves following an injury-interrupted draft year.
The onballer has averaged 18 disposals, six tackles and four clearances across his five appearances in North Melbourne’s VFL side. He has also shown his ability to hit the scoreboard with four goals, two of which he booted in the side’s 75-point win over Frankston last weekend.
Wardlaw found out he would play his first senior game this weekend during the team’s Thursday afternoon meeting.
He will be the club’s third AFL debutant this season, following Harry Sheezel in Round 1 and Blake Drury in Round 8.
North Melbourne’s full Round 10 team will be revealed tonight at 6.20pm.
