North Melbourne's first year players held their first official footy clinic on Thursday in Triabunna, a small town on the east coast of Tasmania, about an hour out of Hobart.

Mason Wood, Taylor Garner, Mitch Wilkins, Tim McGennis, Eric Wallace and Luke McDonald were all on hand to take the group of more than 100 footy-mad kids through some skills.

"We've never taken a proper footy clinic before so today was a great way to meet some of our supporters and give a bit back to them," Mitch Wilkins told NMFC.com.au.

"Even though we're in such a small place, the turnout has been really impressive and the kids are all so pumped to see us and get involved which is awesome."

President of the Triabunna Junior Football Club Neil Edwards said everyone was thrilled to have the Kangaroos players in town and it brought a much needed lift to the community.

"To have well over a hundred children here today from an area which has only got six or seven hundred people in the district, it's just incredible," Edwards said.

"The kids have had such a great time and the effort North Melbourne have put in is just fantastic for Triabunna and the locals. All the kids have been talking non-stop about the Roos coming to town these school holidays and it's really created a lot of enthusiasm amongst the junior footy club and our families in the area."

The Kangaroos visit to Triabunna was not only a day for the locals to have a bit of fun kicking the footy with AFL players, it also helped to inspire local children to keep playing Aussie Rules at a time when their junior football club numbers are dwindling.

"It's really encouraging for our kids to meet the Kangaroos boys and learn so much from them. It gives our juniors the confidence to continue playing footy and learn valuable lessons about hard work and commitment at a very young age."

North Melbourne will again play two home games in Hobart this season in rounds two and six.  The clinic is just one of many ways the club is committing to strengthening the relationship it has with the southern state.

"After today I expect to see those opposition colours a few kids were wearing changed to the royal blue and white. We all went to one of the games at Bellerive (Blundstone Arena) last season and will definitely get along again this year," Edwards added. 

The first-year players will round out the week's activities in Tasmania with another Kanga's Kids' Clinic in Hobart before heading back to Melbourne.
