Dynamic North Melbourne forward Cam Zurhaar slotted 34 goals from 19 appearances last season, and is now being given the opportunity to showcase his ball-winning abilities at the source.

With senior coach Alastair Clarkson having a fondness for multi-positional players, Zurhaar has emerged as a handy onballer so far this campaign with a swift rise in midfield minutes.

In his home state against the Dockers, the No.44 impressed with six clearances and a career-high 26 disposals working through the engine room, but jokingly knocked back a 'clearance beast' label given to him during Monday afternoon's press conference with reporters in Brighton.

"I can't really take that (title) off 'LDU' (Luke Davies-Uniacke)," he laughed.

"But it was good to get in the middle and get my hands on the footy (against Fremantle).

"(The) last couple of years I've been going in there in little spurts but Clarko's been keen to get me in there a bit more and on the weekend I was in there a fair bit.

"I didn't really know what to do with it (the ball), but it's nice to get your hands on the footy more than four times like you normally do as a forward.

"I did a bit of midfield work with Jy (Simpkin) and 'LDU'; those guys are just absolute beasts and they know what they're talking about.

"It makes my work a bit easier when I've got those guys surrounding me."

After dramatic and gritty wins over West Coast and Fremantle to start the season, the Kangaroos sit undefeated in fifth position on the ladder with a grand chance of improving to 3-0 when they challenge Hawthorn this Saturday.

"They say footy's not all about winning but I'll tell you what, it's a whole lot better when you do win," Zurhaar said.

"And, yeah, the confidence around the group and the smiles on the boys' faces ... it's pretty good.

"Getting those wins early in the season proves that all the work that we've done in the pre-season with the new structures and new gameplan is definitely working."
