Scott Thompson has gained great respect this year with his ability to stop the league’s best forwards. So much so, he’s now considered in the top echelon of AFL players.

While Mike Sheahan’s Top 50 is always a topic of great debate, there’s no doubting Thompson is worthy of being ranked 14th in the competition.

Ahead of the likes of key-position players Josh Kennedy, Travis Cloke and Nick Riewoldt, and easily the highest-ranked defender, his rise has been amazing.

Thompson’s scalps this season included Lance Franklin, Jonathon Brown and Jack Riewoldt, but perhaps most significant, was his ability to balance defence and attack, averaging 20 disposals a game.

While Daniel Wells was overlooked for the final All-Australian team, his status as one of the most influential midfielders in the game has been re-affirmed, ranked at number 43.

Ruckman Todd Goldstein came in at number 50, following another outstanding season in which he averaged close to 40 hit-outs a game as North’s number one big man.

With only the top 10 remaining, the likes of Brent Harvey, Andrew Swallow, Lindsay Thomas, Jack Ziebell and Drew Petrie are yet to be named.
