Fresh off an AFL Rising Star nomination, 18-year-old Harry Sheezel has credited his teammates and the club's overall atmosphere as his reason for signing a two-year contract extension.
The Sandringham Dragon product was taken with the third pick of the 2022 AFL Draft and said that the club made it easy for him to commit to Arden Street until at least the end of 2026.
"The whole young group," Sheezel said in reference to what appeals to him the most.
"It feels like there's a great vibe around the place as well.
"Everyone's working really hard to drive the group forward to try and reach success as soon as possible, so I want to be a part of that."
Sheezel put in a veteran-like shift in his first AFL appearance on Saturday, amassing 34 disposals and nine marks off half-back in the five-point win over the Eagles.
And while looking so experienced at the level already, Sheezel gave an insight into what he's been enjoying and working through as a fresh draftee back at the club.
"I've loved the training element of it, like doing extras when you can and a few boys have really helped me with that, like Jy (Simpkin) is a massive trainer," he mentioned.
"I've tried to follow him and learn as much as I can from him as well.
"Another one is probably leadership and how much goes into like caring for your teammates and getting the most out of the group.
"That's something I've learned a lot as well."
As a new player in an AFL system, Sheezel had no trouble displaying his confidence over his first four quarters, and the No.3 smiled when asked about his decision to roll behind key defender Griffin Logue and call for a handball in the early stages of Saturday's game.
"That's a funny one because before the game Griff came up to me and is like, 'whenever you're running past for the handball, I'll just give it no matter what', and I said 'maybe not no matter what' … so when I ran past, I knew I was getting it," he laughed.
"Him (Logue) and everyone else down in the backline gave me so much confidence to just do my thing and it really helped."
