It’s not the ideal time to go into hospital on the eve of the VFL season, but Eric Wallace believes it’s the best thing for him and his development.  The former college basketballer was booked in for some minor knee surgery on Thursday and will be sidelined for up to four weeks.

“It’s just a little clean-up after a bit of over-use over the years,” Wallace told NMFC.com.au.

“A lot of basketball, a lot of jumping and maybe the shock of changing sports spurred it a bit.  So we’re going in the clean it up and allow it to rejuvenate and then I’ll be able to have a fresh start.”

Director of medical services Steve Saunders says the timing is insignificant in comparison to the positive outcomes that will be gained.

“He came to us with some general wear and tear in his knee and he’s been able to get a lot of training done, but the joint’s just giving him a little bit of trouble now and we think it’s a good time to just wash the joint out and progress his rehab from there and get him going again.

“It should only interfere with him for a couple of weeks.”

Always looking on the bright side, Wallace says he’ll use the time to develop his skills.

“I’ll be breaking down my kicking, breaking down my handballing and doing some technical stuff to really improve the fundamentals.  I’ve had a heavy load on my legs making the switch to football, so this could actually be a good thing for me.

“I’ve been able to develop over the last three months and it’ll be great to be able to sit back, take a breather, assess where I’m at and then get a better idea of the direction I need to head in.”
