Gun key forward Nick Larkey has touched on the early effects of Alastair Clarkson's genius during North Melbourne's three-day pre-season camp in Anglesea and Torquay.

As the club's fourth senior coach since the beginning of 2019, the appointment of Clarkson was one of the several major changes that has breathed new life into North Melbourne after disappointing back-to-back campaigns.

The three-time premiership coach officially got underway at Arden Street at the start of last month and has been prominently hands-on during the opening weeks of his tenure, says Larkey.

"(Clarkson's) teaching us his game-plan really so (he's been) quite hands-on, but he's also really good at letting everyone do their roles as well," Larkey mentioned to reporters in Anglesea on Monday.

"He's brought in some really experienced heads and great coaches … we're lucky at the moment.

"He's a figure of authority but he lets everyone do their jobs … all the coaches are on board but he's certainly the headpiece in delivering his game-plan."

As one of the greatest coaches of the modern football era, it's no surprise that Larkey is impressed with Clarkson's approach to the sport.

"I grew up a massive Hawks fan – to think (Clarkson’s) coaching me now is unbelievable," Larkey laughed.

"You just take his word as gospel really, I'm loving learning off him and so are all of the boys and all of the other coaches he's gotten on board."

Over the years Clarkson was at the helm of Hawthorn, his teams were known to conduct a short kicking and high-possession game style, but Larkey doesn't necessarily think the Kangaroos will adopt the same identical strategies.

"There's a few different concepts we're working through in our game-plan," he said.

"I don't think we want to be a one-dimensional team, and it wasn't a one-dimensional way of playing (when Hawthorn played under Clarkson), but it's just how you can break through opposition defences and the different ways you can do that and we're working on different tools we can use to make that work.

"The concepts aren’t dramatically complex or anything but they're just ones you can pick up and get quite easily … (Clarkson's) got a real way with explaining things both on the ground and inside which makes it really easy to understand.

"We’ve already come leaps and bounds so far and it’s only been a couple of weeks."
