North Melbourne has secured a huge bounty of draft selections over the next two years after a trade involving four clubs was agreed to today.
The trade, which included players and draft swaps between Port Adelaide, West Coast Eagles and Greater Western Sydney, will see North Melbourne receive selections 2, 3, 40 and 43 in this year’s NAB AFL Draft.
The Roos will also receive Port Adelaide’s future first-round selection in the 2023 NAB AFL Draft. That selection will be tied to the Power’s finishing position next year.
The deal will see Jason Horne-Francis depart to Port Adelaide and the first selection in this year’s NAB AFL Draft has been acquired by the Giants. A future third-round selection, acquired from Fremantle earlier in the trade period, will head to the Power.
The Roos currently hold four first-round draft selections over the next two years including picks 2 and 3 this year.
The club’s trade haul also saw the addition of former Docker duo Griffin Logue and Darcy Tucker last week.
The Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period concludes on Wednesday and list manager Brady Rawlings said the club can get to work on further improving its list and draft position in the coming two days.
“We started this trade period with pick one and two later selections. We’ve now got picks two and three, plus Griffin, Darcy and two further third-round selections,” Rawlings said.
“Having two picks inside the first three selections in a draft where we really rate the first three players is a great result for the club.
“The two picks in the 40s will probably come in a few places after a couple of father-son bids so we’ve got some flexibility there, too.
“We also think there’s some top-end quality in next year’s draft pool so that extra first-round selection from Port Adelaide gives us a really strong hand looking ahead.
“In all, today sets us up well for the next couple of trade and draft periods.”
