Over the pre-season Wells was expected to be unavailable for Round 1 due to his ongoing recovery from a blood clot in his lungs. Nevertheless, with limited preparation, he ran out for the season opener and played a large part in North's return to form from midway through the year.
It was no coincidence that on the three occasions Wells cracked 30 possessions, North was victorious (Geelong, Adelaide, St Kilda). With the ball in his hands, the Kangaroos became a much more dangerous and unpredictable team.
Wells went down with a calf injury in the early stages of the Round 20 clash against Essendon and North's attack suffered. It only broke the 100-point barrier once in the final month of football, compared to seven times in the previous eight matches when the number 8 was in action.
