The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos have continued their strong pre-season with a two-point victory over premiers Adelaide.
Despite a scoreless final term from the visitors, the Roos were able to hang on and win 3.2 (20) to 2.6 (18).
There was late drama before the game even started with the match being moved to West Lakes due to the condition of Norwood Oval, which delayed bouncedown by 40 minutes.
The Roos had a strong breeze behind them but failed to capitalise with a scoreless first quarter, while the Crows were able to kick the opener against the swirly conditions.
Bella Eddey kicked the Roos' first of the day midway through the second term after unselfish play from Irish recruit Vikki Wall, who passed it off in her first game in the AFLW.
Wall was lively throughout the contest with her lightning pace and booming left foot on show against the AFLW's benchmark side.
Jenna Bruton gave the Roos the perfect start to the third term when she was front and centre of the pack and snapped a goal within the first minute of the restart, while Tahlia Randall have her side the three-quarter time lead thanks to a smother which led to her running into an open goal.
As usual, skipper Emma Kearney led by example down back, Ash Riddell and Jas Garner were busy at the coalface and Erika O'Shea showed plenty with her dash coming out of defence.
Senior coach Darren Crocker said he hoped his players were seeing their hard work during the pre-season paying off.
"It should be giving them more and more evidence that the concepts that we're training, the concepts that we go through on a regular basis both in theaterette with walk-throughs and training drills, you can really see it coming to fruition," he said.
"It really has been a work in progress, it hasn't been just one pre-season, but now we're into the third pre-season under me and really the first pre-season was a bit of a write-off with COVID anyway because we were only training in groups of 10.
"So, there are some good signs and hopefully the players are getting a lot of evidence."
Crocker praised his defence who were able to take away the Crows' scoring power.
"I thought Nicole Bresnehan was super off half-back and there were a number of backs who were very good like Sarah Wright, Jas Ferguson and the skipper, 'Kearns' (Kearney)," he said.
"I thought Amy Smith showed a fair bit on the wing and we put her onball for a short period of time, she was really clean.
"Jenna Bruton was good in the midfield too, Kim Rennie was really strong in the ruck and up forward I thought Tess Craven was really good and 'Tahls' (Randall) looked really dangerous."
Wall's first game of Australian Football also impressed Crocker after the Irish star only touched down in the country last weekend.
"Terrific start, to think that was her first game of Aussie Rules and Erika's (O'Shea) second game ... it's just so impressive the way they've gone about it," Crocker said.
"She's (Wall) got really good speed and power and once she grasps playing with our shaped footy she's going to be a really good, dangerous player for us up forward."
In a blow for the Roos, newly appointed leadership group member Ellie Gavalas suffered a concussion after an early head knock and couldn't return to the field.
The Kangaroos will cap off their pre-season with an intraclub hitout at Arden Street Oval next Saturday afternoon before hosting Gold Coast at Blundstone Arena in Round 1.
