After passing the 250-game milestone against St Kilda in Round 11, North Melbourne skipper Jack Ziebell is set to claim another milestone this weekend against the Bombers.
The long-term club servant will surpass two-time premiership player Adam Simpson and rise to third place on the rankings for games played as Kangaroos captain.
Ziebell’s qualities as a leader were well-established even before he was drafted, and it looks a near-certainty that Brisbane would select the tough midfielder with the seventh selection in the 2007 national draft. However Ziebell happily landed at Arden Street with pick 9.
Elevated to the Kangaroos' leadership group at the age of just 21, he always looked likely to succeed fellow midfield gun Andrew Swallow as captain, taking over from the well-liked on-baller ahead of the 2017 campaign.
Like all long-term skippers, Ziebell has captained the club through giddy highs and crushing lows both on and off the field. Despite the natural ups and downs of football though, the application he's shown in every aspect of club life can never be questioned. He's always worn his heart on his sleeve and put his body on the line for the cause of the club and his teammates.
There are few players in the AFL who have sacrificed as much for the club as Ziebell. The 2017 season is a perfect example of his attitude as he played 19 games for the season and finished sixth in the Syd Barker Medal, all while playing through a broken collarbone, fractured ribs and a severely injured toe.
Whether it be in the midfield, the forward line, or the backline, Ziebell has always given everything he can to his role and his club, and the way he conducts himself both on and off the field is a true embodiment of the Shinboner spirit.
