The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos’ season has come to an unfortunate end, with the loss suffered in Saturday’s qualifying final to Fremantle seeing them eliminated from the competition.
The Dockers proved too strong on the day as they overcame a quarter-time deficit to run away with the clash, eventually winning the game by 38 points.
Senior coach Darren Crocker says he’s counting on his team to bounce back from the frustrating performance.
"To bow out in the way we did in a final like that it pretty disappointing, but we have to lick our wounds, develop, grow and look at areas we can do that," Crocker said.
"I thought in the first quarter the game was looking pretty good for us … Fremantle in the second quarter controlled the contest and outworked us outside it, and then in the third quarter they piled on some goals pretty quickly.
"Our girls tried to hang on, but I think they’re pretty disappointed with that output to finish the season."
KANGAROOS v DOCKERS Full match coverage and stats
This defeat means the Kangaroos have bowed out at the qualifying final stage in each of the last two seasons after losing to Collingwood at the end of the 2021 campaign.
While there were big wins against the likes of Richmond and West Coast this year, the team once again struggled to produce its best football against the top few teams in AFLW.
Crocker says he’s targeting more consistent performances from his team in the future.
"I still believe that our best football is good enough when we can play it for long periods of time. It’s just the last two years, and in particular if I isolate this season, we just haven’t been able to do it for longer," he said.
"We’ve been able to dominate quarters and halves of football, but being able to get a complete four-quarter performance is something we’ve struggled with and that’s something we’ll be looking at closely.
"We’ll dust ourselves off, we’ll review that game and the season pretty strongly, we’ll look at areas we need to grow and get better in."
