At the end of each season, there is the obligatory discussion about who could take “Charlie” home. Footy fans stretch their memories back to games played several months prior in an effort to identify their club’s best chance at winning the coveted award.
This year NMFC.com.au is asking for your help to determine the three best players from each game and you can vote in the Mazda Spirit Awards for your best three Kangaroos.
Running NMFC fan leaderboard
8 – Jarrad Waite
7 – Todd Goldstein
5 – Ben Cunnington
4 – Daniel Wells, Jack Ziebell
3 – Brent Harvey, Nick Dal Santo, Sam Gibson
2 – Ben Jacobs
1 – Ben Brown, Scott Thompson, Robbie Tarrant
Although Jarrad Waite has maintained a lead on top of the fan Brownlow leaderboard over the last few weeks, he’s every chance to be overtaken in Round 9 by Todd Goldstein.
Here is the case for each of the players in the running for the votes, in alphabetical order. We’ll pick our 3-2-1, then you can have your say.
Nick Dal Santo – NMFC
No Roo had more disposals than Dal Santo’s 28, and the veteran complimented that nicely with 12 of them contested, while also chipping in with four clearances.
Sam Docherty – Carlton
Playing off half-back, Docherty had 29 disposals and five rebound 50’s to be the chief source of Carlton’s run and carry.
Bryce Gibbs – Carlton
Gibbs was called upon to do a bit of everything for the Blues on Saturday night. In addition to his 29 disposals and six marks, he also had five hit-outs as he was entrusted with third man up duties.
Todd Goldstein – NMFC
Immense in the ruck, Goldstein had 45 hit-outs, 19 disposals and three goals to convincingly win his matchup and gift the North midfielders first use of the ball all night.
Brent Harvey – NMFC
Showcasing his trademark goal sense and smarts in the forward half, Harvey kicked two goals, had six inside 50’s and 21 disposals. He’s now just three goals away from 500 for his career.
Robbie Tarrant – NMFC
Impenetrable down back, Tarrant could potentially gain fan Brownlow votes two weeks in a row.
After two votes against Essendon, the defender continued his form with another four intercept marks, and also providing valuable offence with 22 disposals.
Jack Ziebell – NMFC
With 513 metres gained from his 22 disposals, Ziebell’s ability to break the lines with his kicking proved crucial on Saturday night. His two goals for the night further demonstrated his ability to hurt opponents in multiple ways.
