It’s the first time the 29-year-old has missed a game since Round 11 in 2011 when he was suspended for one match for rough conduct on Swan Ryan O’Keefe. Before that, he missed Rounds 7 to 11 in 2006.
The number 11 has had to manage a knee issue after going in for post-season surgery last year. That operation meant an interrupted pre-season campaign.
Levi Greenwood has also been sent back to the VFL following the Roos’ loss to the lions last Saturday night.
Greenwood has been listed as an emergency along with Luke Delaney and Will Sierakowski.
Scott McMahon and Lindsay Thomas return to the line-up to play the Blues on Friday at Etihad Stadium.
Thomas is the club’s leading goal kicker and thrives on the big stage with standout games against Carlton in previous years.
