When Rhyce Shaw told the playing group Kyron Hayden would be playing, it’s fair to say the debutant was in a little bit of shock.
Having seen the video of the moment across social media, Shinboner #1021 can’t help but laugh.
“Everyone pretty much mobbed me … I wasn’t too sure what was happening, so I was clapping the whole time,” Hayden explained to North Media.
“If you look at the vision I’m just sitting there clapping. Then I realised I had to go up and shake his (Shaw’s) hand, so, it was a bit of a funny one.
“Looking back on it was a good experience – I’ll remember it forever.”

It’s easy to understand why Hayden might have got caught up in the moment; at the end of last year he was moved to North’s rookie list … barely a few months later he’ll run out in a Saturday night blockbuster against Collingwood.
“It was a long time coming and I’m really excited,” he said.
“I’ve been emergency a couple of weeks now so I was hoping I was pretty close. I was keeping my hopes low and waiting until it actually happened, and fortunately enough I get a gig this week. I’m pretty stoked.”

The Roos’ third pick at the 2017 NAB AFL Draft, Hayden is strong on both the inside and outside, but has added a new dimension to his game in a run-with role.
“It’s been a good challenge. I’ve been talking to Benny (Jacobs) a little bit … he’s been jumping in on my reviews and stuff, so learning off one of the best to do it,” he added.
“He just helps out with positioning and how to manipulate your opponent at stoppages, just little body work tricks and things like that. He’s been really helpful.”
Hayden was presented his jumper by North champion Phil Krakouer on Friday morning.
