AFL R4 preview: Norwood Oval awaits Roos, Lions

For the second straight season, North Melbourne will meet Brisbane during Gather Round

It's the week the League descends on the city of Adelaide, and for the second consecutive season, North Melbourne and Brisbane will battle it out in Gather Round.

It will be the third time in four weeks the Roos have faced a 2023 preliminary finalist, and like the Lions, will be hunting their first win of the season.

    The opposition

Few pundits would have tipped the side that only lost last year's Grand Final by four points to go winless in its first three matches, but that's the current situation Chris Fagan's group finds itself in.

Under Fagan, the Lions have built their style on progressing play by foot, prioritising wing play rather than attacking through the corridor. However, after defeats to Carlton, Fremantle, and Collingwood, they may look to inject some speed into their ball movement when they face a young Kangaroos outfit.

Recent history lies on Brisbane's side, having beaten the Roos in each of the clubs' past six meetings.

    What the coaches have said

North Melbourne senior coach Alastair Clarkson on Wednesday: "Playing these really good sides at the start of the year gives you a good feel for where you need to get to. It's great exposure for the Duursmas and the McKerchers, and still the Sheezels and the Wardlaws. Wardlaw's likely to play on Lachie Neale at stages this week. Lachie's been playing for 10 years and George has played about 10 games, so that’s just great exposure for him."

    13:13

Brisbane senior coach Chris Fagan on Wednesday: "I think the key to it all is not to overreact and just stick with what you know that works. Sometimes the biggest mistake you can make is to jump around too much and change too many things and then you lose the essence of who you are as a team, and blokes really start not believing in themselves."

    Running hot

    Harry Sheezel

The half-back maestro has picked up where he left off following his stellar debut campaign.

North Melbourne's No.3 is yet to fall below 32 touches this season and has been averaging 599.6 metres gained, including a career-high 755m against the Giants in Round 1.

He was arguably the Kangaroos' best afield in last week's Good Friday SuperClash, finishing with a game-high nine intercept possessions, eight marks and a goal assist from his 32 possessions.

    In the mix

With Callum Coleman-Jones going down with a ruptured Achilles, the Roos will look to bring in some tall timber for Friday evening.

Finnbar Maley (21 disposals, 13 marks, two goals) and Charlie Comben (22 disposals, 13 marks) were impressive in North Melbourne's recent VFL win over the Blues, while Hugh Greenwood (15 disposals, one goal) stands as another option, given his ability to challenge in the ruck.

Nine majors in two weeks at the reserves level also has Tyler Sellers in the mix.

AFL R4 match report: Lions bare teeth to maul Roos

North Melbourne remains winless in season 2024 after being outclassed by Brisbane in Gather Round

North Melbourne remains winless in season 2024 after being outclassed by Brisbane in Friday's Gather Round clash at Norwood Oval.

Winless themselves before the game, the Lions burst out of the blocks with a seven-goal opening quarter and never looked back. They eased to a 70-point victory, 16.16 (112) to 6.6 (42).

LIONS v KANGAROOS Full match coverage and stats

Joe Daniher kicked five goals as the Kangaroos' undersized backline again struggled to contain opposition spearheads.

Harry Sheezel held his head high for the Roos, earning 35 disposals, while Charlie Comben (25 touches) showed promise as a key defender on his return to the side.

    06:01

The Lions led by 56 points at half-time against their shell-shocked opponents, and despite some third quarter resistance from the Roos, easily notched their first win of the season to move to a 1-3 win-loss record.

Lachie Neale started the early avalanche with 14 of his 27 disposals in the first term, before midfield mates Hugh McCluggage (36) and Josh Dunkley (31) chimed in to give their team the ascendency in the middle of the ground.

Eric Hipwood put a tough week behind him with three goals, including a high-flying final-quarter mark, in a more involved performance.

Brisbane's pressure was good early on and set the tone, harassing and bustling North into repeated mistakes and able to keep the ball locked in its front half to kick seven first-quarter goals and burst to a 33-point advantage.

Unlike each of their three previous losses where they had troubles converting inside 50s to scores, the Lions had a plethora of avenues to goal against a North defence that, at times, looked all at sea.

The Kangaroos were overwhelmed in the first half, beaten at the contest and then on the spread.

To their credit, they showed some life after the main break, with Eddie Ford and Paul Curtis kicking consecutive goals before the Lions steadied again.

Luke Davies-Uniacke and Tom Powell battled hard alongside Sheezel and Comben.

    ALL THE HIGHLIGHTS

Have North found a key defender?

Charlie Comben was far from perfect, but in his new role as a key defender and playing just his 10th game in five seasons, was a real shining light for the Roos. Although opponent Joe Daniher kicked five goals, they weren't all directly on Comben. The 22-year-old was proactive in his approach and had more than his fair share of wins against Brisbane's spearhead. He finished with 25 disposals, a game-high 13 intercepts and three contested marks.
