AFLW R2 gameday guide: SuperClash arrives at Arden Street

North Melbourne will host Carlton in the inaugural AFLW SuperClash on Sunday afternoon at Arden Street

The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos will hope to back up their impressive season-opening performance with a win over visitors Carlton in the inaugural AFLW SuperClash.

Darren Crocker's side began Sunday's game against St Kilda in formidable fashion, and ultimately left Hobart with a 40-point victory to get its 2023 campaign rolling early.

As for the Blues, they managed to hold off a fast-finishing Gold Coast at Ikon Park last Saturday to claim a two-point win.

Much like the AFL version, the superhero-themed match will give our AFLW team and fans the opportunity to come together for a family-friendly day of fun, with part proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal.

On Sunday from 1pm, families are invited to our inaugural North Melbourne Street Party! There’ll be food trucks, a DJ, giveaways, Royal Children’s Hospital auxiliary market stalls, and meet and greets with Marvel superheroes Spider-Man and Black Widow. The opposition

The Blues survived a late scare at home against the Suns on Saturday, having coughed up the final six scores of the game before they ultimately hung on for a hard-fought, two-point win.

Experienced forward Darcy Vescio was damaging with three goals, while Jessica Dal Pos (19 disposals, nine tackles) and Harriet Cordner (14 disposals, nine intercepts) stood out in the midfield and backline, respectively.

The pressure higher up the ground from Carlton was perhaps the highlight though, as first-time coach Mathew Buck's group recorded 91 tackles.

Twenty-one came inside 50, a total just three shy of the AFLW record.

    The in-form Roo

    Taylah Gatt

Her game may have flown under the radar last weekend given the influence of Jasmine Garner and Ash Riddell, but the second-year winger produced a career-best afternoon at Blundstone Arena.

Gatt collected 17 disposals to top her previous best of 12, and was often seen both clearing the ball from defensive 50 and getting involved in attacking chains with her speed.

We may only be one round into proceedings this season, but Gatt is already showing signs of great improvement and looks primed to have a breakout 2023.

    Last time we met

The Roos travelled across town on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon to Ikon Park to face the Blues early in Season 6.

Stellar performances from Riddell (30 disposals, six inside 50s), Jenna Bruton (28 disposals, four score involvements), and Mia King (25 disposals, five tackles) drove the visitors to a 30-point win, and Alice O'Loughlin's two final-quarter goals put the result beyond doubt.

It was North Melbourne's third consecutive win against Carlton since it entered the competition in 2019, the Blues not having emerged victorious over the Roos in that time.

AFLW R2 match report: Roos cruise past Blues in huge SuperClash win

The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos have continued their impressive start to the season, defeating Carlton by 60 points at Arden Street Oval

Jasmine Garner has led the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos to a 60-point win over Carlton to ensure the Roos remain unbeaten after two rounds of the season.

Garner dominated from the opening bounce as the Kangaroos kept the Blues scoreless until the dying stages in a 10.6 (66) to 1.0 (6) win at Arden Street Oval in the inaugural AFLW SuperClash, which raised funds for the Royal Children's Hospital's Good Friday Appeal.

She racked up 36 disposals, eight clearances, and 10 inside 50s, plus kicked a goal.

    04:42

Former St Kilda player Kate Shierlaw (two goals, 10 disposals) opened the scoring for North in kicking the only goal of the first term.

The Kangaroos added two more goals in the second term, despite Abbie McKay (25 disposals, six clearances) and Mimi Hill (30, six) working hard to lift the Blues.

North's veteran skipper Emma Kearney stood tall in the backline, collecting 19 disposals, six intercept possessions and four marks and it was much the same story in the second half, with the Blues playing on the Kangaroos' terms.

Tahlia Randall (four goals, 15 disposals) added to the Kangaroos' haul with two majors as the Blues remained scoreless in the third term.

    01:33

Carlton's under-fire defence was led by Harriet Cordner, who took three contested marks and had an equal game-high nine intercept possessions.

Gaelic football star Erone Fitzpatrick (one goal, nine disposals, two clearances) ended the Blues' scoring drought in the final stanza in kicking their only goal of the match.

It was nothing but a consolation for the Blues as the Kangaroos kicked a further four goals.

Ash Riddell (36 disposals, six clearances, six inside 50s) starred for North while Emma King (two goals) and Bella Eddey (one) also slotted majors.

North Melbourne is on top of the ladder after opening the season with a 40-point win over St Kilda.

It will next meet Geelong, also unbeaten after two rounds, at GMHBA Stadium.

Carlton will take on the bottom-of-the-table West Coast in Perth.
