VFLW R7 team: Senior duo rested, forward returns from ACL tear

North Melbourne has made five changes to its VFLW side leading into its seventh game of the campaign

North Melbourne has made five changes to its VFLW side leading into Round 7 clash with an in-form Port Melbourne outfit.

AFLW-listed duo Ruby Tripodi and Taylah Gatt have been managed and will miss the Saturday night hitout.

It will be just the second game Gatt has missed this season, while Tripodi, who arrived at Arden Street after Round 2, has featured in the club's past four games.

    1:23:13

However, returning to the line-up is Ciara Fitzgerald. The defender has been one of the Kangaroos' most impressive performers so far this year, and has recovered from a concussion sustained in Round 6 against Darebin to become available.

Joining her as inclusions are Mara McSweeney, Annie Xanthos, Dalia Edward and Jennifer Guy, who has been named to play her first VFLW game since injuring her ACL in early stages of last season against Casey.

Guy has played the past three matches with Old Launcestonians in Tasmania to build up her game time, and has managed to play a crucial role and hit the scoreboard.

VFLW R7 match report: Roos hold off Borough in downpour

North Melbourne's VFLW side overcame Port Melbourne in trying conditions on Saturday night, winning 0.6 (6) to 0.4 (4) at ETU Stadium

North Melbourne's VFLW side overcame Port Melbourne in trying conditions on Saturday night, winning 0.6 (6) to 0.4 (4) at ETU Stadium.

The Kangaroos, who had a lost a heartbreaker to the Cats in Round 6, were elated on the final siren after scraping by the home side which had won its previous five matches.

"It was a really hard night for footy," VFLW coach Steph Binder said.

    1:16:30

"It was freezing cold and pouring with rain, but I was super proud of the way we played.

"We were really resilient, we kept grinding away and although it doesn't show on the scoreboard we were able to maintain possession, have time in our forward half and get looks at goal. They didn't quite come off but it was enough to keep chipping away with those behinds."

BOROUGH v KANGAROOS Full match coverage and stats

After coming close to knocking off a strong Geelong outfit for the second time this season last week, Binder said this win over Port Melbourne, a 5-1 team before Round 7, will be "huge" for morale.

"The girls were over the moon, it was such a team effort and it's going to give them heaps of confidence heading into the match with Collingwood next week," she said.

Audrey Rhodes stood tall in midfield in the absence of AFLW-listed players Ruby Tripodi and Taylah Gatt. She finished with a game-high 29 disposals and nine clearances, as well as five tackles.

"Audrey is so deceptive, she's very slight but is so strong in the contest, so a game with lots of stoppages and congestion like this one, it suited her perfectly," Binder mentioned.

"She's also got such amazing spread in attack and defence - she's an absolute ripper."

Reni Hicks had 25 touches and seven tackles out of defence, while Marli Klaumanns-Moller had 11 tackles of her own to go along with her 21 possessions.
