North Melbourne v Geelong at Blundstone Arena, 1.10pm AEST

Both teams enter this clash off the back of frustrating losses. For the Kangaroos it was a slow start that doomed them to defeat. For Geelong it was a slow finish against the Hawks.

AFL R6 match preview: Can the Roos bounce back again?

Here are four of the most pressing questions ahead of North Melbourne's Round 6 clash with Geelong

North Melbourne continues its season in Tasmania this weekend and will be hoping to put the demons of last week's Good Friday SuperClash behind it.

Geelong will offer a different type of challenge than the Kangaroos have faced this season. It will be a battle between one of the youngest teams in the competition in North and one of the most experienced in the Cats.

Here are four of the most pressing questions ahead of North Melbourne's Round 5 clash with Geelong.

How does the forward line shape up?

If there's one line where the Kangaroos have exciting, youthful depth to call upon, it's the forward line.

The firing Nick Larkey could be joined by any combination of players this week, and the pressure being placed on the selected Kangaroos is sure to excite any North fan.

The most eye-catching potential availability this week is Cam Zurhaar. After missing last week's SuperClash due to concussion, he looks set to return to the side should he continue to tick off the AFL's concussion protocols.

Eddie Ford earned his chance at senior level this season through strong VFL form, and Paul Curtis and Charlie Comben are looking to follow in his footsteps after their respective four-goal hauls in the VFL win over Footscray.

If you add in the ability of the likes of Callum Coleman-Jones and Charlie Lazzaro to run through the forward line, David Noble suddenly has a very welcome selection headache.

    Can the Tassie form continue?

There would be, arguably, no better time to register a much-needed victory than this week seeing as for the first time this season North Melbourne's AFL program travels to its home away from home.

The Kangaroos have a historically good club record in Tasmania. The AFLW side has never lost there, while the AFL side has won 17 of 27 games it's contested there.

Hopefully the team selected for Sunday's game can extend that strong record.

Can the Roos bounce back again?

This weekend North Melbourne will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to the Western Bulldogs by 68 points.

A poor first-quarter showing set the Kangaroos up for the rest of the game, losing the opening term 51-6. While the rest of the game was competitive there was little chance of emerging victorious after struggling so early.

The Kangaroos have proved they can bounce back after tough defeats having put in a strong display against the Swans in Round 4 after being on the wrong end of a Brisbane thumping in Round 3.

David Noble won't be pleased his side has to bounce back and prove themselves once again, but it wouldn't be the first time they've done it during his tenure.

    01:18

    Geelong's fourth-quarter fade

If there's a team who will come out with a chip on its shoulder and a point to prove in the AFL this weekend, it's Geelong.

The Cats were cruising and in control against Hawthorn last week, but a lacklustre final term in which they conceded 28 points to four saw them finish the clash on the wrong side of a 12-point margin.

For an ageing Geelong side who still expect to be competing strongly come the business end of the season, fade-outs like that are absolutely unacceptable.

They'll have spent the last week licking their wounds. It's up to the Kangaroos to double-down on the damage.

AFL R6 match report: Cats show class in Hobart

Geelong proves too strong for North Melbourne at Blundstone Arena

Geelong has bounced back from its shock defeat to Hawthorn in round four, defeating North Melbourne by 60 points at Hobart’s Blundstone Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Cats were never threatened and registered their ninth consecutive victory against the Roos, 17.19 (121) to 9.7 (61).

Geelong’s star forward duo of Jeremy Cameron (seven goals) and Tom Hawkins (four) had a day out, combing for 11 goals, while Zach Tuohy (33 disposals) and Cameron Guthrie (28) were prolific.

    07:27

The Cats controlled much of the opening term (they were +53 for possessions and +12 for contested possessions), but after majors to Cameron and Brad Close, the Cats were wasteful in front of goal.

Tuohy was creating plenty of drive off half-back and finished the first quarter with 12 possessions, while Geelong debutant Oliver Dempsey did some nice things and had two shots at goals.

The Roos lifted late in the quarter and finally kicked a goal, via Hugh Greenwood, in the 22nd minute, but a late goal to Guthrie was not what the doctor ordered for North, and Geelong went to the first break 17 points in front.

    00:47

It was the perfect start to the second quarter for North Melbourne, with Luke McDonald snapping a long goal within 20 seconds, but Cameron replied with his second a minute later.

Cameron was particularly busy in the second term, kicking three goals and setting one up for his partner in crime, Hawkins, while Tuohy continued to run amok, and by half-time, the Irishman had racked up 21 touches.

A four-goal-to-one second quarter saw Geelong take a 37-point edge into the main break.

Like they did in the second quarter, the Kangaroos kicked a quick goal to start the third, with Cameron Zurhaar (three goals) registering his first.

The Roos’ joy was short-lived, however, as Hawkins kicked his second minutes later, while his third came after Dempsey’s first, which sent was well-received by his team-mates and coach.

North Melbourne salvaged something from the wreck, winning the final term 5.2 to 4.4, but will have plenty of soul-searching to do ahead of a date with the 4-2 Blues on Saturday night.

    Debutants show plenty of promise

Both sides would be well-pleased with the debuts of their youngsters, Oliver Dempsey (Geelong) and Paul Curtis (North Melbourne). Dempsey who had plenty of mates in the stands, showed plenty, finishing with 15 possessions and a goal. After a few failed attempts in the first half, the former basketballer, who was taken with pick 15 in last year’s NAB AFL Rookie Draft, kicked his first goal early in the third quarter, much to the delight of his teammates and coach Chris Scott. He has poise, reads the ball well, and has a touch of class. The Cats have found (another) one. Curtis, meanwhile, who was selected with pick 35 in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, finished with 11 disposals and 1.3. He did some nice things and will no doubt derive great benefit from the outing.
