Tradie Olympics – AFLW Week 6 vs Western Bulldogs

The Tradie Olympics made an exciting return during our Week 6 AFLW match against the Western Bulldogs at Arden Street. Fans had the chance to test their skills at the Freestyle marquee, competing for prizes like a Dulux paint voucher and a DeWalt drill. Participants raced through a trade-themed course, with the finalists facing off on the big screen at three-quarter time as the crowd cheered, ultimately crowning our Gold Medallist.

The Freestyle team was on-site to engage participants and share information about pathways in trades for women and non-binary people. They also promoted our Kicking Goals in Trades schools program and provided support for those seeking apprenticeships.

Freestyle Career Development Networking Breakfast 2024

Women and non-binary people in trades recently gathered at Arden Street for our Freestyle Career Development Networking Breakfast. AFLW Players Libby Birch and Jasmine Garner shared valuable insights on leadership in male-dominated industries, while attendees explored career opportunities on major Victorian projects. The event provided an excellent platform for tradies to connect with industry professionals, gain new skills, and enhance their career development.

Trades Fit Expo 2024

03:06

The Freestyle program was front and centre at the Trades Fit Expo, held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, where over 4000 female and non-binary students explored careers in trade-based industries.

Students had the chance to engage with our partners to learn about employment opinions in their industries. Plus they had the opportunity to meet North Melbourne AFLW players Jasmine Garner, Jenna Bruton, Libby Birch and Emma King, and AFL player Callum Coleman-Jones.

The program is a joint initiative between the North Melbourne Football Club and Empowered Women in Trade, who combine their resources and experience to create safe pathways for young people in industries that have traditionally been male-dominated.

We were also joined by our valued partners:

    • Laing O’Rourke
    • Stanley Black & Decker
    • RedZed
    • Dulux
    • Yarra Trams
    • CSR Gyprock

Trades Fit Expo 2023

As part of our partnership with the Freestyle – Women in Trades Program, we were thrilled to have been front and centre at the Trades Fit Expo held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The event was attended by almost 3,000 female and non-binary students, career counsellors, and parents. We were also joined by North Melbourne AFLW superstars Jasmine Garner and Jenna Bruton, along with AFL guns Will Phillips and Nick Larkey.

The event also marked the launch of our 'Kicking Goals in Trades' program, where Freestyle will be going out into high schools around Victoria delivering bespoke trades and experience for year 7-12 students.

This is a free program for schools, and to celebrate the launch of this wonderful initiative, any school who registers between now and May 31 will go into the draw to win a Dulux paint pack valued at $900 and a DeWalt Power Stack pack valued at $400.

Freestyle Immersion Night

The Freestyle immersion night allowed young people who attended an opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the trade and infrastructure industry.

The information night introduced role models to look up to in the industry, educators to help you learn trades and businesses who could provide employment to young people.

The immersion night had a range of hands-on activities, a panel of women across the industry, and connection to educators and future employers.
