North Melbourne's Aaron Edwards was pulled over by police this morning while driving to training.

Edwards was clocked travelling 38km per hour over the speed limit.

He was given a preliminary breath test, which indicated that he had alcohol in his system. He chose not to undertake a secondary test.

He is expected to be charged with speeding and faces the possibility of losing his licence.

The club's leaders have decided to suspend Edwards from playing in the NAB Cup competition and first four rounds of the home and away season, meaning he will not be available for senior selection until round 5.

He will continue to train with the squad and undertake extra work in the community during this time.

The leaders also recommended Edwards be fined $5000, which is the maximum allowable amount under the AFL players' code of conduct.

Chief Executive Eugene Arocca said that Edwards' behaviour was unacceptable.

"Obviously we are disappointed with Aaron for putting himself and the club in this situation.

"Our playing leaders have acted swiftly and appropriately in deciding on an adequate consequence.

"The club will continue to work closely with Aaron regarding the matter."
