If you were watching the game on Sunday, it might have felt like Jaidyn Stephenson was popping up everywhere on the field.

The 22-year-old’s flexibility makes him a valuable asset for the North Melbourne team, and it seems he can have an impact wherever he’s playing.

“I'm playing deep forward, high forward, wing, midfield, just sort of wherever they need me,” Stephenson told North Media. 

“I know it's just what you say, but I honestly will just play wherever ‘Nobes’ (David Noble) needs me, and I've been happy to do that so far.”

Stephenson has registered career-best numbers in the opening five rounds of 2021.

He’s averaged 20 disposals, 3 tackles, 3 inside 50s and over a goal a game, in a strong start to his time in the royal blue and white. 

It’s easy to forget the former Magpie is in just his fourth season at the highest level.

A Rising Star winner in 2018, Stephenson has achieved plenty in just 59 AFL games. 

“I feel like having played in that Grand Final in 2018, everyone just goes, “oh he's played in the Grand Final, he must be old.”,” he said. 

“I only just turned 22 and I'm only in my fourth year, so it is only early days and I'm trying to figure out still where my best position is.

“Whether that be as a deep forward or on the wing or midfield, wherever it may be, I'm just trying to learn all of them. 

“It's always good to have that ability to be a swing man and a utility and play in all those spots in case you needed.”

Stephenson is well and truly invested in his new club and the journey ahead, and says it won’t be long until he can sing the song for the first time.

“Against Adelaide at three-quarter time, I thought, “I think we're going to win this one.” ... it wasn't to be, we almost completely switched off and that was quite a disappointing result. 

“But even against Geelong at half-time, we came out feeling really positive and really upbeat. And at the end of the day, we probably just got beaten by a better side on the day. They (the Cats) slowly just pulled that tug of war towards them, but I think that win’s certainly very soon. 

“Even if we can get one or two going into the bye, it would really set up the back half of our year and we can then build the rest of the year.

“If finals are out of contention by then, then we build a really good solid foundation for the start of next year.”
