For any footballer, there's no better moment than kicking your first goal, let alone achieving it with your very first kick at AFL level.

Tom Powell lived that dream on Sunday.

“I always get nervous before footy games and didn’t get heaps of sleep the night before,” the debutant told North Media.

“When I took the mark and went back for the set shot I realised I had to kick a snap, so I tried that.

“It was awesome to see it go through and have all the boys get around me … 'Bucko' (Ben McKay) said he ran 70 metres to get to me, so it made me feel special.”

Along with fellow debutant Charlie Lazzaro, Powell was presented his debut guernsey before the game, with his family in attendance.

The number 24 said having the ability to share that moment with his loved ones made it even more special.

“I had heaps of friends and relatives who made the trip from Adelaide for the game. It was super nice of them to put in a big effort like that,” Powell said.

“I was super happy to get my jumper presented to me and my family … It was a bit emotional.

“I was still focused on the game but it was a great moment.”

Powell impressed in the royal blue and white, finishing the match with 19 disposals to go with a memorable goal.

A spearing, precision pass inside 50 to Josh Walker another highlight of a memorable debut.

But even with his first game in the books, he isn’t resting on his laurels and says he's already looking to improve heading into Round 2.

“Port Adelaide are a very good side and they move the ball really quickly,” Powell added.

“There’s things I still need to adjust to and get used to … the speed players move at, playing in front of a big crowd...

“I got some advice from a couple of the boys before we ran out just telling me to really stand there and soak in the energy and atmosphere.”
