Jack Ziebell will line up in defence against St Kilda on Thursday, North Melbourne coach David Noble has confirmed.

The number seven has been a regular feature in the back half during pre-season training and was a standout during Friday’s match simulation.

“I just had a feel that he read the game really well, he competes well,” Noble said of the decision to move Ziebell from his traditional midfield and forward roles.

“I think in the back end you can manoeuvre your way through the speed of the game better.

“I think we can use his explosive method off half-back.”

Noble said Ziebell had embraced the new role and had already settled into the role perfectly.

“When I sat down and spoke to him, he was really open, he said ‘yep, happy to have a look at it’,” Noble explained.

“He’s a pro; he’s done a lot of work and research on half-back and what that looks like, what the role entails, where we need him to play … he’s just continued to get better each week and I’ve been really impressed.

“His ability to mark the ball last week (during match simulation) was really good”

Noble said North would benefit from Ziebell’s leadership in the back half, alongside the likes of Robbie Tarrant, Luke McDonald and new recruit Aidan Corr.

“I think from a comms perspective, the ability for defenders to see what’s going on further up the ground, shift your defence, create better shape behind the ball and they can help you attack at the same time … I still think the mid’s the primary area, the game starts and re-starts there, but certainly the back is of significant importance.”

Noble confirmed the Roos would unveil three draftees against the Saints, with Tom Powell, Charlie Lazzaro and Eddie Ford all set to be in action.

The match will be live streamed on NMFC.com.au and the club’s app from 12pm AEDT on Thursday.
