Luke Davies-Uniacke is eager to build on his debut game in North Melbourne’s VFL side.
The skilful midfielder made his first appearance at Windy Hill last weekend, racking up 18 possessions in the middle of the ground.
With his first hit-out now behind him, the 18-year-old has reflected positively on the overall experience.
“It was good. It made me get back to playing on instincts really,” Davies-Uniacke told North Media.
“That was probably the biggest thing coming from the coaches throughout the week. I didn’t have all the pressures surrounding AFL football or anything like that.
“It was really good playing with the first-year boys.”
The game served as an opportunity for the North faithful to witness the development of the club’s earliest draft pick since 2006, who has already played five games of senior footy.
Despite his limited experience, Davies-Uniacke slotted into the Roos midfield.
As the youngster admits, the change of pace was something that took him by surprise.
“One of the biggest things that I noticed is that it’s hard to break away or anything like that, but I really enjoyed myself out there,” he said.
“I’m working on getting out of the blocks earlier, around the stoppages and just reacting, using my pace, which hides away a little bit when I’m playing. Getting off my heels and staying on my toes.
“I noticed it [the VFL] was heaps more congested than AFL football,”
Davies-Uniacke has been named in the centre for the second consecutive week, alongside poised pair Josh Williams and Tyrone Leonardis.
The 18-year-old will look to add to his lively performance with a repeat effort against Richmond on Sunday morning.
Although his game-time has been limited, Davies-Uniacke plans to continue his development as he works his way back into contention for senior selection.
“Even though I’m not playing as much game time as some of the rest of the boys, I’m just going out there and making sure I give 110 percent every time I’m on,” he added.
“It’s about not shying away from anything. I’m making sure that while I’m in the VFL, I’m backing myself and using my skills.”
Fans are invited to attend Sunday’s VFL curtain-raiser against Richmond at Etihad Stadium, with the first bounce at 9.35am. Ticket-holders to North’s AFL match against Richmond will gain free admission to the VFL game.
