Sam Gibson blitzed the two-kilometre time-trial in January this year and he’s backed it up with another impressive first place finish.

Ryan Bastinac came in second place with Will Sierakowski, Shaun Atley, Kieran Harper and Andrew Swallow rounding out the top six runners at Albert Park today.

The 26-year old ran closely with young speedsters Bastinac and Sierakowski for most of the time-trial until the last lap when he charged to the finish line.

“Basti (Ryan Bastinac) is a great guy to run with and those boys set a really good pace. It’s important to have somebody to pace yourself off and keep pushing you along,” Gibson told kangaroos.com.au.

“It’s always good to get the first time-trial over and done with. It was quite windy out there too which made it a little more difficult at times.”

Although he’s satisfied with his efforts this morning, Gibson isn’t complacent and will continue pushing himself to see more improvement, especially after his first trip to Utah.

“I’m happy with my time but it’s just a benchmark now to see how fast we can go now and how much room for improvement there is.

“I only did about half a pre-season last year once I got drafted so the aim this year is to get a bit quicker with a full pre-season behind me as well as the benefits from Utah."

Despite the gruelling sessions ahead of him, Gibson is looking forward to the camp and is ready to take the challenge head on.

“I’m really excited for Utah. Pre-season training at the club every day can become a bit monotonous so it will be good to change the environment and see how hard I can push myself.

“It sounds like it will be really tough, but for me I think it’s best to go in with no expectations and just work hard at what we’re told to do."
