He’s been at the club for just over a week, but it seems there’s no hiding for rookie Cam Pedersen.

Talented key defenders are a rare breed, but Brad Scott could be spoilt for choice with those he has at his disposal.

"We've got some pretty significant competition for key position spots," Scott said on Wednesday.

But Scott went further when asked about Pedersen’s playing prospects in 2011 saying it’s up to the former Box Hill Hawk to put his hand up and force his way into the senior side.

"With (Lachie) Hansen, (Drew) Petrie, (Nathan) Grima, (Scott) Thompson and (Robbie) Tarrant there are some players that are probably ahead of Cam at this stage in terms of playing, but we know that if need be, we can play him as a key position player. It's up to him to force himself in front of those players.

"He (Pedersen) was a specific need for us as an extra key-position player. He's someone who can come in and play AFL footy straight away if need be."

Pedersen’s first test may come in two months time when the Kangaroos take on Geelong and the Bulldogs in the NAB Cup on February 20.

While Pedersen's experience at full-back in the VFL should hold him in good shape, Robbie Tarrant will be hoping for an injury free season.

"Robbie Tarrant is training really well and we'll certainly play him in the NAB Cup provided he's healthy,” Scott stated.

"He would have played the last half of last year if he hadn't pretty severely broken his thumb. We're certainly looking forward to seeing what he can do."

Scott has enjoyed the rare luxury of having almost every player fit to train during the club's pre-season campaign, and that first bounce can't come quick enough.

"We anticipate every player will be fit and available at this stage.

"We are quietly confident with the way we are going. Our good players are training well and we've got some young guys who might surprise a few people."
