Earmarked for more time in the midfield, Campbell had a strong pre-season and looked primed for his best year yet.

But things didn't go to plan and he was dropped following the big loss to St Kilda in round two. A week later, things took a turn for the worse when he injured his ankle playing for North Ballarat in the VFL.

Campbell didn't return until round nine and despite some good games against the Power and Tigers, he was again on the outer after injuring his calf.

A strong performance in the VFL opened the door for one last chance in round 22 and Campbell was in fine form, booting two goals and grabbing 15 possessions to end the season on a high.

AFL.com.au’s Steve Lavell says: "Frustrating year for the small forward, who was expected to spend more time in the midfield. Showed glimpses of his trademark burst, but struggled to win the football. Defensive pressure is a strength."

Highlights: Round 22 v Melbourne - 15 possessions, 2 goals

The fans say: Mark - September 9th
Small forward keep the speed. MC and L Thomas playing for same spot.

Tim - September 9th
Yeah Matty has a better more workmanlike, team oriented and humble attitude to his craft than say his compatriate Lindsay. I think he has the shine and brilliance that can be augmented by a ballgetting tenacity at stoppages. As a smaller in stature player I look forward to his skill, agility and speed making him bigger.

Pedro - September 9th
what a dissappointing year it was for Matty, lets hope he can stay injury free next year and blitz them as he has done in previous years.

John - September 9th
Matt showed signs in the last game of what is he is capable of. Regardless of how many possessions he is getting or the numbers of goals he is getting, to be a consistent valuable player he must increase his tackling pressure. He has a couple of mates in that regard. We would all love to see him play regularly to the standard he is capable of. He is an excitement machine when he is 'on' but we need more gut busting effort.

Razor - September 10th
Has plenty of to offer if fully fit.

Darren - September 10th
Campbell's first year was serviceable, since then he has offered very little. He lacks consistency & his forward line pressure has reduced significantly since his debut season. 2011 will be a make or break season. He may well be gone because a lot of others (Adams, Warren) are far better options as the smaller forwards. Cannot play Thomas & Campbell in the forward line together because they are both inconsistent.
