Werribee's golden draw
The Werribee Tigers are still yet to taste victory despite coming tantalisingly close against future AFL side the Gold Coast on Saturday night.
The Tigers mounted a courageous fight-back under lights at Chirnside Park but inaccurate kicking squandered any chance of victory and the match ended in a nail-biting draw.
Trailing by 21 points at three-quarter time, the home side booted four goals and six behinds compared to the Gold Coast’s one goal and three behinds.
“The game was played on the Gold Coast’s terms until the final quarter. They were playing good, clean, up-tempo footy,” North Melbourne development coach Jason Lappin told kangaroos.com.au.
“In the last term Robbie Tarrant (15 disposals, 2 goals) and Nathan O’Keefe (15 disposals, 1 goal) looked really dangerous up forward and were so close to getting us over the line.”
Tarrant booted a goal from 60m to reduce the margin to a goal, and Lappin said he could have kicked six or seven if not for his inaccuracy.
“Robbie is right on the brink of breaking a game wide open. He is quickly beginning to find his touch and I think being a few years out of the game has had an impact on his form until recently.”
Kangaroos’ midfielder Ben Ross had another impressive game amassing 27 touches in his second successive game at VFL level.
“Ben narrowly missed two shots on goal but provided a lot of run and is sure to come into contention for senior selection next week,” Lappin added.
Lappin said Ayden Kennedy (19 disposals) was ‘terrific’ in his first game with the Tigers’ seniors. Drafted as a forward, Kennedy worked hard to find the footy in an unfamiliar role at half-back.
Alan Obst continued his comeback and was named in the best with 20 disposals while playing on Nathan Ablett while draftee Jamie MacMillan picked up 14 possessions in defence.
Rookie Majak Daw was another to continue his steady improvement. While he didn’t get a lot of the ball, Lappin praised his defensive pressure which netted the 18 year-old seven tackles and 16 hit-outs during spells in the ruck.
In the reserves, Matthew Scott did plenty to suggest he could play his first game at VFL senior level in the coming weeks after collecting 35 possessions and a goal as Werribee defeated Frankston by 109 points.
Conor Meredith put in a more positive performance than last week and tallied 17 disposals.
