When it comes to AFL careers, Alan Obst has had it harder than most young players.

The 23 year-old was drafted in 2005 by Adelaide, but has managed just five senior games to his name.

He's twice been delisted in his time at the Crows and North Melbourne, but Obst won't be deterred from his aim to play regular AFL football.

With Werribee's season all but over, the former Central Districts premiership player has taken his game to a new level in recent weeks.

Obst (18 possessions, 12 marks) was named best afield during stints up forward, down back and in the ruck as the Tigers came agonizingly close to snatching a win against Gold Coast.

"Alan was super aggressive and gave Karmichael Hunt a bit of a run around in the first quarter," North development coach Jason Lappin told kangaroos.com.au.

"The boys finished the game right on top and would have won if it had gone any longer, Gold Coast were out on their feet."

Ben Speight (14 possessions, 4 tackles) had a relatively quiet day but came to life in the final term when the game up for grabs while rookie Matthew Scott (15 possessions) continued to improve.

"Matt was a key contributor in the second half during the Tigers' revival, especially around the stoppages." Lappin added.

Windy conditions made things difficult for Nathan O'Keefe (11 possessions, 3 marks) up forward, but he continued to work hard and present.

Werribee fell by 16 points in the reserves, but there were some promising signs for some up-and-coming Kangaroos.

Majak Daw (9 possessions, 4 marks) made his long awaited return from injury and was important in attack.

"Majak was really exciting as a key forward and was easily Werribee's best forward, booting three goals. He laid a number of super tackles."

Ayden Kennedy (16 possessions, 5 marks) earned praise for his efforts on Hawthorn's Beau Dowler.

"It was a brilliant effort from Ayden to keep Dowler goal-less in the second half after he'd kicked four in the first. It showed a lot of class from a young player."

Irishman Conor Meredith (16 possessions, 8 tackles) recovered from a quiet first quarter to have a big impact late in the match.

"Conor used his speed in the second half to be a very effective contributor. He really took the game on and impressed with his run and use of the ball."
