North Melbourne rookie Matthew Scott faces up to a year on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury in the VFL on Sunday.

"He had a collision during the game on the weekend," Director of Medical Services and Player Pathways Steve Saunders told kangaroos.com.au.

"He's had a tear of his anterior cruciate ligament and a bit of damage to his medial ligament as well, so he'll be seeing a surgeon tomorrow to have the ligaments re-constructed and the joint tidied up."

The injury was a cruel blow for the 20 year-old, who won Werribee's reserves best and fairest in 2010 and has shown significant improvement in the senior side this year.

In the first quarter of Sunday's match he had 12 possessions and four clearances before the injury.

"He was playing really well up until that time, so that makes it even more disappointing for Matty," Saunders added.

"He won't be able to return to playing this year. With a young, talented player like Matthew, we really wouldn't look at doing something like LARS which might give him a chance to be back sooner. He'd even be short on timeframes with regards to that procedure as well."

"He'll spend an 11 or 12 month period getting himself rehabilitated before he plays again."

The bad news for Scott comes just a day after confirmation Sam Wright will miss the rest of the season due to a severe shoulder injury.
