Tour de Kangaroo bounces back
Renowned as being a thrilling and rewarding adventure, Tour de Kangaroo is returning in 2010 bigger and better than ever.
This year, the Tour de Kangaroo convoy will head to Bathurst for the 50th anniversary of the Bathurst 1000.
The brainchild of club legend Allen Aylett and now in its sixth year, Tour de Kangaroo’s return has been highly anticipated.
“Most people know all about the Bathurst 1000, but none will have experienced the great race like we’re going to,” Allen Aylett told kangaroos.com.au
Premiership players Wayne Schimmelbusch, Ken Sheldon and Peter McConville have all joined previous trips and this year it’s hoped North Melbourne great Glenn Archer will hop on board.
“I’ll be talking to Glenn as well as some other past players from North Melbourne and other clubs. We like to have all the VFL/AFL eras represented in some form or another.”
This year’s trip will commence on the weekend after the AFL Grand Final and is expected to take around eight days with up to 60 vehicles in tow.
“This tour promises to rank right up there with our past adventures. There’s nothing quite like seeing what our country has to offer through some outback driving in the company of some wonderful people.”
Funds raised will go directly to North Melbourne’s Learning and Life Centre which aims to educate and support up to five thousand students from all walks of life each year.
All entrants must have a pre-1979 car or 4WD that can handle outback driving.
“For those considering joining us, there’s still plenty of time to get ready and organised. We’re well equipped to help out in any way.”
The starting point will be at the club’s new headquarters on Arden Street in North Melbourne and then through the Brisbane Ranges and onto lunch in Dunkeld before tackling the winding roads through the Grampians. The tour will move onto the outback sheep and cattle stations and will also pass through Renmark, Silverton, Darling River country, Whitecliffs and Parkes.
An enormous amount of effort is put into the organisation of the trip and all entrants are guaranteed to have an experience they’ll never forget.
