North Melbourne has just established a relationship with the Lost Dogs’ Home and is helping to increase awareness of its Foster Care Program. The program has been set up for animals in need of extra attention and care before they’re suitable for adoption. They may be underweight, recovering from surgery or illness, underage or participating in behaviour modification training.

Shaun Atley and Liam Anthony visited the Lost Dogs’ Home and spent time with underage Blue Heelers and two other precious pups who are recovering from knee reconstructions.

“I know a few of the players at Aegis Park are interested in looking after some of the pups until they are old enough to go into a proper family environment. But there are also some guys looking at doing some volunteering during their spare time because the Dogs’ Home is just a block away from our training,” Atley said.

“The Home is also looking for volunteers to walk dogs in their lunch breaks or down-time periods at work. I’ll be heading down there for sure.”

The Foster Care Program means that, for the required time of recovery, the animal is placed in a temporary home away from the shelter to rehabilitate and recover in safe and relaxed surrounds. Animals heal faster in a stress-free environment, and a home is the perfect place for them to get one-on-one interaction and the love they need to grow and or get well.

“These pups were adorable and it took a fair bit for me not to take one home. I’m not allowed any pets where I live at the moment but will be dropping back in to help out,” Anthony said.

“The Foster Care Program is a great initiative and the Home does a great community service but obviously needs plenty of support and donations to keep looking after dogs like these.”
