It was an effort against Josh Kennedy in Round 11 that had everyone talking. As the home team went into attack, the Eagles’ full-forward looked set for an easy mark inside 50.
It wasn’t to be. Without hesitation, McDonald threw his body into the contest, desperate to get a hand on the ball. He succeeded, copping a big hit on the way through.
That act of desperation saw the North youngster recognised as the winner of the Mazda Spirit Awards for 2014.
McDonald was recognised in the category of ‘Power and Toughness’, with players also being voted for ‘Strength’ and ‘Performance’ throughout the season – all things you can expect in a Mazda BT-50.
His effort registered almost 30 per cent of the vote, with Brent Harvey’s long goal (performance) against Port Adelaide in Round 3 next in line.
