Matt Rendell, national recruiting manager
"Straight after the national draft we told Tim Milera we'd take him with our first pick in the rookie draft, so we were hoping he would still be there [at pick No.15] and Jake von Bertouch was probably the most talented bigger bloke in there.
"We wanted Milera as a developing small forward because it's going to take a little time to get his conditioning up to AFL level, but Ian Callinan is ready to go. There wasn't any plan as far as needs went. We just thought Milera was the most talented kid that didn't get picked in the national draft and then we were picking the next-best player on our list."
BRISBANE LIONS
Rob Kerr, national talent manager
"Brad Harvey's speed is clearly an attribute that's desirable and his skill is quite solid. He probably needs to add a little bit more endurance to his game ... but we've seen enough instances of him winning the ball and then bursting away to say that's the type of thing we'd like to see at senior level.
"One of the things that's worked in Bart McCulloch's favour is the new substitute rule. If the trend does go in the direction of one ruckman and the second ruckman being that ruckman-forward, that's the type of role we could see Bart playing.
"Albert Proud's applied himself really well over the first couple of weeks of the pre-season and he's trending in the right direction. He knows he's got that last opportunity to be a league footballer.
"With Broc McCauley, we probably always wanted to add another ruckman and give a bit more depth to our true rucking division."
CARLTON
Wayne Hughes, recruiting manager
"These were mostly guys who had been in good form at senior level in various state leagues around the country.
"I feel like I've been watching Ed Curnow for a fair while now, but he was certainly in career-best form before he got injured this year. He's well into his rehab phase and we'll give him some time to get himself completely right.
"Rhys O'Keeffe has been training really well after a bad couple of years with injury, so we just wanted to take a bit of pressure off him and give him some more time."
COLLINGWOOD
Derek Hine, recruiting manager
"With the way we tackled the national draft we took in a lot of medium/utility players so today we had a bit of a focus on bringing in some talls and we were able to do that. Three out of the four players (outside Paul Cribbin) were 192cm and above, so it gives us a nice mix of developing talls that can come in behind Travis [Cloke] and Chris Dawes."
ESSENDON
Adrian Dodoro, manager player personnel
"At 187 cm, Michael Hibberd's a running defender type who can play small and tall; he’s a left footer who has good speed, uses the ball well and can push up into the midfield." (Courtesy of essendonfc.com.au)
FREMANTLE
Brad Lloyd, recruiting manager
"It was part of our list management strategy to secure a potential senior player in the pre-season draft, and Jack [Anthony] is a quality player who's going to give us some extra firepower.
"Gavin Roberts has been training at the club and our medical and sports science staff have worked really closely with him and feel that he'll cope really well in our program. We think Nick Lower can have an impact pretty quickly and he's going to get plenty of opportunities."
GEELONG
Stephen Wells, recruiting manager
"Josh [Walker] is from Geelong but that didn't really come into it. He's earned his chance based purely on his football. We watched George [Burbury] play during the year and he was very impressive at the AFL Tasmania testing day. We think he's a good rookie option because he hasn't played a lot of footy but he's got heaps of natural talent.
"We think Jon Simpkin could cope with the rigours of AFL footy straight away. We haven't just drafted him as back-up, we think he can develop into a good AFL player."
GOLD COAST
Marcus Ashcroft, football manager
"We only decided on taking Nathan[Ablett] in the pre-season a day or so ago - we were committed to take him as either there or as a rookie, but the more we thought about where our list would be next year, we don't have any real key forwards, and Nathan's played that at Geelong.
"Jake [Crawford] relocated from the Sunshine Coast a couple of years ago - he arrived on day one with no contract, just hoping to be part of the initial squad. Joel [Tippett] had stress fractures in his back when he came from Brisbane, and he's done everything right to get himself fit enough to play in our VFL side last season."
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY
Neville Stibbard, recruiting manager
"We set out to get a balance of old and young. We haven't got a ruckman among our 12 17-year-olds or among our zone selections, so we really needed to get a ruckman. Jon [Giles] is looked upon as the best ruckman outside the AFL and that's why we pursued him.
"We see [Stephen Clifton] as an AFL player. He's still developing because he's never been in a full-time program. We've got all his GPS data and that's all up to AFL standard."
HAWTHORN
Graham Wright, recruiting manager
"We got a good mix of players in the draft and then we've also got Travis Tuck, Paul Johnson and Nathan Ahmat-Watkins coming in to train with us which is great.
"Cam Bruce has just been outstanding since joining us and has shown enormous leadership qualities. You're never 100 per cent sure on these things but we were rapt to get him. We certainly haven't taken him on board from a one-year perspective. Even though he is 31 we feel he can play for another two or three years, but obviously that's dependant on how his body goes."
MELBOURNE
Barry Prendergast, recruiting manager
"Our last six national draft picks have been 190cm and over. We were looking to bolster our run, speed and ground level players. We think we've been able to do that.
"We wanted to get another mature ruckman on to our playing list. We've been looking at the options there. Robbie Campbell is obviously a really good option in that respect. He is a premiership player and has great experience. He finished off the year at Box Hill last year."
NORTH MELBOURNE
Bryce Lewis, recruiting manager
"Brad Scott's view is that we've been able to get a fairly-balanced list together in the last couple of seasons, so there wasn't a strong emphasis on positional needs per se, but it is good that we've been able to bring in two different types of players.
Obviously Cameron [Pedersen] is a 23-year-old that's had a couple of really good seasons at VFL level, so he's more of your ready-to-go type, and Aaron [Mullett] is an 18-year-old straight out of the TAC Cup system ... he's going to need some time to add some size and strength because he is lightly framed."
RICHMOND
Francis Jackson, recruiting manager
"With Bachar [Houli], it was just his high skill level and his ability to kick the footy - we felt he lacked opportunity at Essendon, and for him to make a choice that he wanted to come to us was a real positive.
"Brad Miller's fitted in to Richmond as if he's been here his whole life, and he's displayed fantastic leadership skills. Ben [Jakobi] is from NSW, but played for Victoria at under-15 level. With Tommy [Hislop], the coach loves him - perhaps they are very similar."
SYDNEY SWANS
Kinnear Beatson, recruiting manager
"Prior to the national draft, our aim was to get some further outside leg speed, bolster our key position stocks and try to find the third tall running type defender and Max [Otten] fitted that role for us, given we weren't able to accommodate that during the national draft.
"Ben [Haren] comes into it as the key position type we were looking for. He's shown at SANFL Colts level that he can play back and forward. The fact also that he's a left footer with good mobility - they're the things that we were most impressed with.
"Eugene [Kruger] played some reserves footy for us last year and he did well in those games. He's trained the house down so far, and he probably has that outside running speed that we were looking for as well."
WEST COAST
Trevor Woodhouse, recruiting manager
"We were probably a bit void of talls over the last 12 months, and a few of our tall players are getting closer to the end than the beginning, so we thought we'd go down that track. Blayne Wilson's a good defender who we were happy to get in the pre-season draft - we see it as a bit of a bonus.
"Anton Hamp is still only very slight, but he's a forward with a lot of upside. Jeremy McGovern is a big, strong boy, but he'll take some time to adjust to the AFL standard. He's a longer-term project for us."
WESTERN BULLDOGS
Simon Dalrymple, recruiting manager
"We had two young defenders rated in our top five but they were ruled out due to medical reasons. We've got two boys with elite speed - [Luke] Dahlhaus and [Jason] Johannissen - and we've really satisfied the need to get some quick players into our midfield for the long-term.
[Ed] Barlow can play as a hit-up forward, run-with player or as a medium back, and [Mitch] Hahn thinks he can play a lot of senior games and hopefully in a premiership. Our key criteria in choosing rookies were having the attitude to get better and train the house down."
