Warren holds head high
New Werribee coach Scott West was forced to put his entire playing squad on notice after an embarrassing performance against reigning VFL premier Port Melbourne
Everything started well with Ben Warren finding the goals after some good run by Will Sierakowski but the Werribee defenders including Brad Mangan were under the pump as Port skipped out to an extraordinary 48-points quarter-time lead.
Dean Galea and Adrian Bonaddio were the chief destroyers for Port with four first term goals each as the Tigers were in a familiar position as last week leaking nine majors in 15 minutes.
Contested ball was an issue for Werribee as was the ability to go forward with any purpose.
Sierakowski was active early in the second along with former Port player Malcolm Lynch and the pair set up a goal for Ben McKinley minutes in. But it was all the Borough at half-time with a 64-point buffer.
Cam Pedersen led the Tigers on the stat sheet with ten touches and Ben Speight had eight.
Warren started the third term as he did the first, with a strong lead, mark and goal but Port maintained the momentum and control of the match. In a customary hard working effort, he kicked three for the quarter.
McKinley was able to snag his second goal from congestion and was spotted all over the ground during the afternoon but even he couldn't stop Port from hitting the scoreboard and the home side held a 72-point advantage with a quarter to play.
"Yeah the scoreboard is disappointing, but probably the lack of enthusiasm that we've played with," West told his players in the huddle.
"We're just making simple mistakes with our handballs, coughing it up...what we're playing for now is respect. Respect for us, the jumper, the club, pride in your own performance. I can guarantee everyone is aging for their spot next week. I don't care who you are or where you come from or what your reputation is, you're playing for your spot..."
Warren heeded the call and continued to dominate in his position setting up two goals in the fourth and the Tigers began to lift, but only briefly.
The man also known as 'Milky' slotted through five for the day but West didn't have too many others to be impressed by and will have a tough time at the selection table with his side beaten by 59-points.
