Ruck depth a boon for North
Todd Goldstein's emergence is a great sign for the Kangaroos looking forward, says Hamish McIntosh
McIntosh, 24, has played 78 games since 2006 and, in nearing career-best form, has had the support of 21-year-old Goldstein for 12 matches this season.
However, Goldstein's emergence has been particularly compelling with a 25 hit-out, five-goal performance against Melbourne in round 19 showing he was ready for more responsibility.
"Todd's improved out of sight this year," McIntosh said. "Going on to next year and the years to come, hopefully Todd and I can form a really good partnership in the ruck.
"We can play forward as well and contribute that way to a game."
McIntosh said he and Goldstein could look to Port Adelaide's revered pairing of Brendon Lade and Dean Brogan or Geelong's 2008 grand final combination of Brad Ottens and Mark Blake when considering what they could achieve together.
They will clash with Lade and Brogan for the second time this season when Port hosts North at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.
McIntosh said that as Goldstein played more senior football, it was natural that they would be compared with each other.
"There's always going to be pressure on you," McIntosh said. "Everyone on the list is like that with players coming up behind them or players wanting the same position. There's nothing wrong with that.
"There's nothing wrong with a bit of healthy banter and healthy fighting between teammates to get that competitive spirit out of each other.
"Hopefully we can hold down the two ruck spots and form a good partnership like a lot of other clubs have. If we can do that, that could help the team go a long way."
Earlier this year, McIntosh identified that he had to focus on his additional efforts at stoppages and was aware of the need for modern day ruckmen to become extra midfielders, much like West Coast's Dean Cox.
McIntosh sits within North's top five ball-winners this season, is equal third in marks and has drifted forward for 13 goals.
"I think that's what I've tried to improve on with my fitness and my strength," he said.
"This year I've felt fit and being able to run out games has been great. Hopefully we finish off the season well this week and then continue the form into next year."
