2013 in review: December
The first week of the last month in 2013 saw the playing list wrap up their Utah trip.
New recruit Nick Dal Santo was already spotting the similarities between his new coach and Ross Lyon.
"He (Scott) is very straight down the line, he's firm, but he comes across as a real players' coach. You can just tell he is in it with the playing group.
"Brad is still pretty fit, he hasn't slimmed down, he still has that size and intimidation factor.β
Senior Development Coach Gavin Brown commented that the lure of working with Scott was a significant reason in his switch from Carlton.
"I was super-impressed with him in my time at Collingwood and the last couple of weeks I can tell why he's a senior coach,β he told NMFC.com.au.
"He knows the game very well, his philosophies are terrific. He's got a great work ethic and a great rapport with the staff and the players. I saw that at Collingwood so it's no surprise."
On the playersβ return from Utah, they were subjected to a two-kilometre time trial at Albert Park. The pleasing surprise was Mason Wood, finishing third in his first time trial since his knee injury.
"I haven't had the intense conditioning that everyone else has had, especially missing the conditioning in the legs. But I did a lot of swimming while in Utah which I think definitely helped with my breathing and lung capacity.
"I never really knew how my knee would be and what it would be capable of coming back, and whether it was going to feel any different to what it was before the injury. Surprisingly it felt great."
The 2013/2014 Family Day in Melbourne was held mid-way through December at Aegis Park. Hundreds of fans attended and were able to meet all their favourite players.
The sweltering heat at Aegis Park was a huge contrast to the freezing cold conditions of Utah, as the temperature soared to 40 degrees during the final training sessions of the year.
The players then went on their Christmas break on the 20th of December, scheduled to return to the club on the 7th of January.
