Taylor made for AFL
Taylor Hine continues to push his case for senior selection, named in the best players for Werribee on Saturday.
"Taylor's been terrific in all our pre-season practice matches and again today," West told NMFC.com.au after the win.
"His ability to read the play is great. He played on Cain for Port who I think is a very good player and not only did he beat him defensively, he probably got over him offensively.
"He's a calm head down back and someone with noticeable AFL experience."
After being named in North's squad of 25 but placed on the emergency list at final selection, Majak Daw (12 possessions, 27 hit-outs) played well for the Tigers in the ruck/forward role, partnering with Daniel Currie.
"With Maj looking to spend a little bit of time down forward it allows Cuz (Currie) to ruck a fair bit early, get him off and then we have the double-pronged attack with Maj jumping all over the other ruck."
Daw booted two goals in his first VFL match of the year while Currie (14 disposals, 20 hit-outs) clearly won the hit-out count.
"It's great to have those guys play with us, obviously our main goal is to get them in some good form so they can play for the Kangaroos and they certainly didn't do themselves any harm in that push today."
Levi Greenwood (27 touches, 11 marks) also impressed winning a lot of the ball and slotted through a goal while ex-Demon Jordan Gysberts (21 possessions) was another significant contributor.
"I thought Levi was terrific. He's outstanding at the stoppages but I thought he spread really well today. He got back to help out but also forward of the footy where he was able to be used offensively.
"Gys (Gysberts) again was good in close. Neither of them dominated but the pleasing thing is, they didn't have to, they played well in a really good win in a good team. I was really pleased with their efforts.
"Having Cuz and Maj there also helped them too."
New draftee Mason Wood showed his work ethic and determination, overcoming ankle soreness in the second quarter.
"Mason was in doubt after half time but he toughed it out and came back on. It's really pleasing because he could have thrown it in and said it was too sore but he toughed it out."
Young rookie Tim McGennis was another important part of the Werribee outfit with West seeing encouraging signs from the 18-year old.
"Tim's been playing inside for us but we decided to play him outside today just with some of Port's bigger bodies and experienced players and he played well.
"What you're looking for is for him to have a good understanding of his role and he did that."
Future father-son recruit Luke McDonald (22 touches, 5 marks) played an impressive first senior VFL match, kicking a perfect opening goal for Werribee within the first five minutes.
"Luke was good. For a young kid he's got a lot of composure. Sometimes it's difficult stepping up to VFL senior footy because you're against stronger bodies and it's quicker than TAC.
"His composure and use of the footy was outstanding."
Ben Speight went off before half time with an ankle injury. The hard-nosed midfielder came out battered and bruised after also being trampled on by a Port Melbourne player.
North development coach Jarred Moore (27 possessions) was another named in Werribee's best and continues to back up his claims around winning the VFL Liston Medal.
"Through the middle of the ground, Jarred's ball use and calm head under pressure really stands out. His AFL experience is extremely helpful to all the guys around him."
Werribee's emphatic win was the result of an even contribution but it was former Kangaroo Ben Warren who stood out the most. The de-listed forward kicked eleven goals and just one behind and barely put a foot wrong all day.
"Ben's a great example of not throwing the towel in. Through the disappointment of getting delisted, he's shown a great attitude. He trains the house down and he's a leader to our young guys.
"He was disappointed but he pushed that aside and got reward today for a lot of hard work."
