Stepping it up
Closing in on 200 games, Michael Firrito is one of North Melbourne's most valued and experienced players.
"It's disappointing to lose Loose (to suspension) because he's a very important part of our back-line," Firrito told NMFC.com.au.
"We'll have to carry the burden with him missing against Collingwood. Myself, Shaun Atley and Aaron Mullett will have to step up because it certainly does leave a hole."
North's 12-5 (win-loss) record with McMahon in the side in 2012 compared to 2-4 in his absence is reflective of the stability he provides down back.
"When he came back from his sickness last year he really steadied us up.
"Having a wiser head in there helps given we're young in terms of games played with a few of the defenders. He always comes over the top and helps out so he's good to play with."
Collingwood's wide array of small and medium-sized forwards can provide trouble for any team and it was Firrito who played a large role in minimising their influence the late-season victory in 2012.
This time without McMahon by his side, Firrito will require the younger brigade to lift their game to his level.
Whichever way the match committee elects to go with a spot vacant in the back six, the number 11 is bullish about the potential of the club's up-and-comers.
"It's a really good opportunity for some of the younger guys to make a name for themselves against a quality side," Firrito added.
"In the back-line we've got Taylor Hine and Aaron Mullett. Then there's also guys like Shaun Atley and Sam Wright who are very exciting to watch with their progression."
As one of the mainstays in North's defence in recent years, Firrito is well respected by those pushing up.
"I certainly enjoy it (mentoring the younger players). It's exciting, especially when the boys kick on like Atley did last year. It's very rewarding."
On a personal level, heading into his 11th season Firrito is pleased with his summer on the track and in the NAB Cup.
"I've been happy so far. I've been able to play all the games except the first one against Melbourne and got some good work into my body. I feel like I'm in a good position to have a good year.
"They (the pre-seasons) don't get any easier that's for sure. It's been pretty solid; it seems to go up another level every single year. The running goes up, the weights go up. I feel like I've come out of it in good shape.
"... but it was pretty disappointing to go down against Geelong (on Saturday). We could have played in a NAB Cup Grand Final which would have been great."
From a team perspective, North's list is 'fit and healthy' leaving coach Brad Scott spoilt for chance ahead of the home and away season, and one player in particular has caught Firrito's eye.
"Ben Jacobs has impressed me a lot. I didn't know a whole lot about him before he came to the club but his skills have been great and I'm expecting big things from him."
