Story of the game
In difficult conditions, the Tigers burst out of the blocks, booting four goals to one in the opening term.
Werribee held a four-goal buffer for most of the day, before Coburg made a late run with two goals early in the last.
“They (the Tigers) had them all day before the opposition came with a bit of momentum, but once they got within a couple, the boys were able to hold them off when it mattered,” Development Manager Ben Dyer said.
In a low scoring affair, with just 14 goals between the sides, Werribee recorded a 13-point win.
Points of interest
1. For the first time this season, Tim McGenniss stepped away from the role as the Tigers’ designated stopper. The rookie was given the chance to make a mark through the midfield.
“We were keen for him to go and win his own ball and the conditions suited him. He was able to get boot to ball and get it going up forward.
“The opportunity for him to think about the patterns he runs to get the ball on the outside was something new. He did that quite well and he’ll be able to take some things out of that to hopefully improve his run-with roles as well.” - Ben Dyer
2. Kieran Harper excelled in an inside-midfield role during the second quarter, racking up ‘8 or 9’ disposals in quick time.
“He was able to really hunt the ball well and get it going forward,” Dyer said.
But the number 23 struggled to get into the play while playing across the wing.
“In a day where everyone is just trying to grab the ball and quick kick forward, it meant he wasn’t able to join in and link up as well as you might usually do in those outside roles.”
3. On a difficult day for forwards, Mason Wood found the going tough early, before moving up to the wing.
“He was able to setup really well in defensive cover and from that point really make an impact.
“A few times he had to stand in line and absorb the pressure and he was able to do that. He also used the ball well.
“He went from struggling up front to really impacting in that wing-cover role.
“He’s got that endurance and speed combination that’s pretty important for the wing.” – Ben Dyer
4. Sam Wright continued a consistent month of football, with a strong performance in the back half.
“He had a really good defend first mentality. He made sure that his opponent was taken care of and then was able to run some pretty good patterns to link up out of defence.
“He always comes back (from the seniors) and impacts well.” - Ben Dyer
5. Jarred Moore was clearly pleased with himself after another best-on-ground performance.
An unnamed source captured this photo of the former Swan and now North development coach making his team-mates wait on the ground in the freezing cold while he was conducting media interviews.
Most likely call-up: Mason Wood, Sam Wright, Scott McMahon
