North Melbourne was one of just five clubs to make a profit without revenue from poker machines in 2013, The Age has revealed.

With a profit of $1.3 million, North joined Collingwood, Richmond, West Coast and Fremantle as clubs who made money from conventional football incomes.

The figures were presented by the AFL's chief financial officer Ian Andrerson at a recent meeting of chief executives, with the Kangaroos' efforts viewed as extraordinary, given they are the only Victorian club without poker machines.

At the other end of the scale, Hawthorn is believed to have earned more than $4 million from its Waverley Gardens gaming venue.

'A lean operation' enabled North to make an impressive profit, according to its CEO Carl Dilena.

The club is aiming to increase its player spending to 100 per cent of the salary cap this year by paying players in advance for 2015.

North was the first club AFL club to sign the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation's charter in October last year, designed to educate and raise awareness about the risks of gambling, specifically to young people.
