Desperate to recapture his best form, Sam Wright is eyeing a permanent move down back.

Adaptability is a great asset, but being relied upon at both ends of the ground has also made it harder to for the 23-year-old to settle.  Now, he’s keen to lock down his spot in what’s shaping as a crucial year individually.

“I’ve been predominantly playing half-back again this year (in the pre-season), so I’m really excited about that,” Wright told NMFC.com.au.

“I started my career up forward, but the game’s changed so much, even in two or three years. That mid-forward role can be a real graveyard shift at times.

“I can have a good quarter, then struggle for the next. Down back gives me that even game where I can contribute for four quarters.”

A foot injury, shoulder soreness and poor form made for a forgettable year in 2013, but Wright is looking ahead.

“It was a terrible year for me last year. I struggled with form and confidence. I know if I do everything right now, that’s where I’ll build my confidence and I’ll have a good year.”

Doing his best work with the ball in his hands, North’s number 19 is also more than capable of holding down a key-tagging role. But fitness is the key.

Back into most of the training activity following shoulder surgery, he’s acutely aware of how vital this season becomes.

“This is my year to be injury free, because I haven’t had a pre-season yet in six years. It’s a really important time for me right now and hopefully that will lead to my best year yet.”

His team-mates aren’t making it easy though.

“I have to wear a pink bib at training which is a bit embarrassing. They know not to tackle you and swing you to the ground and things like that, but I think they see it and want to get me even more,” Wright joked.

“I’m pretty close to full contract. I’ve got a couple more tests to pass.”

North has been one of the most talked about teams around the AFL during the pre-season campaign, with a raft of on and off-field additions raising expectations externally.

While the players aren’t buying in to the talk, Wright says they’ll be doing all they can to find success.

“We say this every year – we’ve developed a hell of a lot over the last few years,” he added.

“Although the results didn’t go our way last year, I think everyone would say there’s been a massive change this year, just in the aggression at training and also the competitiveness. I haven’t seen it like it yet, there have been a few spot-fires, especially with big Drew Petrie in the forward line.

“We’re really excited – can’t wait.”
