The AFL Commission has approved the scheduling of a match on Good Friday.

While it's yet to be confirmed whether the first fixture of its kind will be played next year, the growing push from clubs and fans means the religious holiday is likely to feature AFL games in the near future.

"There has been a growing appetite to hold a game on this day and on balance we believe the time is right," Chairman Mike Fitzpatrick said.

"AFL matches are scheduled on every other public holiday during the season and we know that many families want to be able to attend and or watch football together on that day.

"It is now up to the AFL Executive to determine whether or not to create a Good Friday fixture, and if so, when and where.  Other details such as who might compete in such a game will follow."

North Melbourne has been a strong campaigner to play on Good Friday, first floating the idea with the AFL in 1992.

Hundreds of Kangaroos' fans attended the club's training session on Good Friday this year, throwing their support behind the concept.
