During the AFL’s multicultural round, North Melbourne and The Huddle had a significant presence in promoting social diversity and inclusiveness.
The Huddle’s Jerry Ng starred in the national marketing campaign and TV advertisement for the AFL as well as featuring on Channel 7’s Sunrise twice. Jerry promoted the round, his obsession with footy stats and love for the Kangaroos.
At North’s clash against Carlton on Friday, almost thirty children from a variety of multicultural backgrounds, including Majak Daw’s eight-year old brother Ajak, formed a vibrant guard of honour for the players to run through at Etihad Stadium.
Afterwards they sat in the crowd with their families and friends, some of whom had never been to an Australian Rules match before.
At half-time the AusKickers ran back on the field to play their own competitive match, with the sound of African drummers helping cheer them to victory against the mini Blues by 38 points to zero.
Despite the disappointing result for the senior Kangaroos on the night, multicultural round was an amazing display of diversity and the power of Australian Rules football to bring people of ‘many cultures’ together for ‘one game’.
