They say 'home is where the heart is' and for North Melbourne's Ben Brown it's a phrase that rings true.

The developing ruckman has become somewhat of a local hero since winning a spot on an AFL list, and he's fast become a mentor for budding football stars around Devonport.

On Wednesday, Brown was on hand for the launch of the Spirit Cup, a primary school football initiative held at his junior Tasmanian club.

"It’s a program for about 12 schools in the Mersey Leven area for kids to get involved in football," he told NMFC.com.au.

"We got about 100 kids there who play locally to help in their development and give them the confidence to pursue the sport.

β€œIt's run in tandem with the Spirit of Tasmania and Devonport Footy Club."

For the first year player, it's all about providing an enjoyable, welcoming environment for youngsters, but no doubt many of the kids have dreams of following in his footsteps on the way to an AFL club.

"I just tried to be as open with them as I could and give every kid as much time as I could," he added.

"The main thing for these kids is that they’re having fun and when they get older they’ll probably find where their allegiances lie. Hopefully we’ll get a few more North kids on board from doing things like this."

After spending the day in Devonport visiting his former primary and secondary schools, Brown boarded the Spirit of Tasmania for the journey back to Melbourne. A 6am arrival time ensured he didn't miss a second of training.
