Collingwood has received no compensation for losing restricted free agent Nathan Brown to St Kilda on Sunday.
The premiership defender played 130 games with the Magpies but decided to join the Saints, with the deal being signed off on Sunday.
He attracted interest from North Melbourne, but the Kangaroos cooled on him after losing Daniel Wells to Collingwood.
However, the Saints came into the picture late last week and he agreed to join the club on a two-year deal.
The AFL said that the 27-year-old's age and length of contract were the reasons behind no compensation being awarded.
Under free agency rules, the net effect on clubs of losing a free agent is also taken into account with the Magpies signing Fremantle's Chris Mayne and North Melbourne's Daniel Wells.
Only four players moved clubs during this season's free agency period.
