Michael Firrito believes increased numbers on the training track will ensure North Melbourne can make a full scale assault on its pre-season campaign.
Speaking from Arden Street, where the senior group returned to training on Tuesday, Firrito said he and his teammates are excited to be back.
“I guess it’s like your first day back at school when you’re a kid,” he told NMFC.com.au.
“There’s lot of stories going on and laughing and giggling, then once the running starts the vocal stuff goes down a little bit because everyone’s hurting.”
The Roos have close to a full contingent of players spread between their Melbourne base and a high-altitude camp in Utah, with a tough three-week block ahead before the Christmas break.
“Everyone’s come back healthy and the numbers out on the track are fantastic,” Firrito said.
“This time 12 months ago, we had a lot more injuries and operations and more boys in rehab.
“We know the work we put in at this time of year will pay dividends later.”
Having signed a new contract in October, Firrito is now preparing for his 14th season, having just turned 32.
“Brad Scott was fantastic and Cameron Joyce (List Manager) throughout it all (contract negotiations),” the veteran said.
“Brad let me know just after the Preliminary Final that there was a spot there on the list for me. It took a couple of extra weeks to finalise the deal, but I’m very happy to be part of it again.
“It’s exciting times for this footy club.”
While he’s very much a mainstay in the Roos’ back six, Firrito is keen to play his part in the development of the club’s young key-position players.
Sam Durdin and Daniel Nielson are both coming off long-term injuries, but making positive steps on their respective comeback trails.
“To have both of them coming through … both had shortened years last year through injury, so we’re really excited to get them back amongst it.
“They are two players who are going to be great for us for many years to come. If I can help their development, it’s rewarding for me and it’s going to help us win a premiership.”
